Frequently asked questions about baby wraps

Choosing a wrap

Which baby wrap should I choose for a newborn?

Both the woven wrap and the ring sling BabyMonkey can be used from the earliest months, always respecting the minimum weight and the specific product instructions.

The woven wrap offers more tying options and highly personalised adjustment; the ring sling is quicker to put on and especially practical for short, frequent use.

What is the difference between a woven wrap and a ring sling?

The woven wrap is a long piece of woven fabric tied around the baby and wearer. It is highly versatile and allows many front, hip and back carries.

The ring sling, uses two rings for adjustment and is shorter. It is compact, quick to put on and especially convenient for frequent ups and downs.

Woven or stretchy wrap: which should I choose?

A woven wrap maintains its support as the baby grows and can be used with many different carries. A stretchy wrap is generally intended mainly for the first months and requires specific use depending on the model.

BabyMonkey currently offers woven wraps and ring slings.

Which wrap is easiest to use?

The ring sling requires fewer steps and can be adjusted quickly, so it is often chosen by those who want a straightforward carrier. A woven wrap takes a little more practice but offers greater versatility.

Baby wrap or baby carrier: which should I choose?

It depends on your family’s needs. A wrap offers highly personalised adjustment and close, enveloping contact; a structured carrier is generally quicker to put on and adjust.

For families who want to start from the earliest months, BabyMonkey offers several options, including woven wraps, Ring Slings and the Regolo Newborn carrier.

Up to what weight can a BabyMonkey wrap be used?

BabyMonkey woven wraps and ring slings are designed for use up to 18 kg. Actual usable time also depends on the child’s build, the carry used and the wearer’s comfort.

How do I choose the size of a woven wrap?

The size of a woven wrap mainly depends on the wearer’s build and the carries you want to use, not the child’s age.

Size 6 is generally the most versatile; very petite wearers may prefer size 5, while taller or broader builds may need size 7.

See the complete guide to sizes, composition and fabric weight.

Can mum and dad use the same wrap?

Yes. For a woven wrap, simply choose a length suitable for both wearers’ builds and preferred carries; if their builds are very different, it is usually best to choose the larger size required.

Newborns, ergonomics and safety

Can a wrap be used from birth?

Yes, provided you choose a suitable carrier and follow the minimum weight, instructions and product guidance. With a newborn, it is especially important that the baby is high and close to the body, with the face always visible and airways clear.

What is the ergonomic position in a wrap?

The baby’s pelvis should be well supported, with the knees higher than the bottom and the back supported in its natural curve. The fabric should support the baby without creating excessive pressure.

With newborns, it is also essential to check that the chin is not pressed onto the chest and that the nose and mouth remain clear at all times.

How can I tell if my newborn is positioned correctly?

The baby should be close to the wearer’s body and high enough to be checked easily. The face should always be visible, the head properly supported when needed and the airways completely clear.

Does a newborn’s head always need support?

Until the baby has good head control, the fabric should provide appropriate support without covering the face. When the baby is asleep, check that the head remains stable and the nose and mouth are clear.

Can my baby sleep in a wrap?

Yes. Many babies fall asleep while being carried. During sleep, the wearer should remain alert and regularly check that the face is visible, the airways are clear and the position remains correct.

The parent should not sleep while carrying the baby in a wrap.

Can the baby breathe properly in a wrap?

Yes, when the wrap is used correctly. The face must remain uncovered and visible, the nose and mouth must be clear and the chin must not be pressed against the chest.

Is the cradle carry recommended?

No. BabyMonkey does not recommend the cradle carry for everyday newborn carrying. We prefer upright, well-supported positions that make it easy to monitor the baby’s face and keep the airways clear.

Can I carry my baby facing outward in a wrap?

No. BabyMonkey wraps are designed to carry the baby facing the wearer, on the hip or, when development allows, on the back.

Is a baby wrap safe?

A wrap is a safe carrier when used correctly, following the instructions and choosing a carry appropriate to the baby’s age and development.

Before each use, check the fabric, seams and, in the case of a Ring Sling, the rings as well.

What should I do if my baby cries in the wrap?

Crying can have many causes. First check the baby’s position, wrap tension, temperature, nappy and needs. If the wrap is introduced later, it can help to start with short periods and increase them gradually.

Carries and carrying positions

How do you put on a baby wrap?

A woven wrap is used with different tying methods, while a ring sling is adjusted by sliding the fabric through the two rings. With a little practice, both can be put on independently.

Is it easy to put on a wrap by yourself?

Yes. The carries are designed to be tied independently. At first, it helps to practise calmly in front of a mirror or with an experienced person, especially for back carries.

When can I carry my baby on the hip?

Hip carrying can be introduced once the baby has good head control, generally at around 3 months. It can be done with both a woven wrap and a ring sling.

When can I carry my baby on my back?

With a woven wrap, back carrying can generally begin at around 6 months, when the baby has good head and trunk control and the wearer is confident with the manoeuvre.

The BabyMonkey ring sling is mainly intended for front and hip carrying.

How long can I carry my baby on the front?

There is no fixed point when you must stop front carrying. As the baby grows, however, hip or back carrying may become more comfortable for weight distribution and allow the child to see more of the surroundings.

What are the main woven wrap carries?

Our tutorials include Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC), Front Cross Carry (FCC), Front Kangaroo Carry (KC), Robin’s Hip Carry (RHC), Rucksack Carry (RC) and Double Hammock (DH).

Comfort and everyday use

How long can I carry my baby in a wrap each day?

There is no single time limit that applies to every family. If the baby and wearer are comfortable, the position is correct and the airways are clear, a wrap can also be used for longer periods, with breaks whenever needed.

Can I use a wrap every day?

Yes. A wrap can be used every day at home, on walks, while getting around or when travelling, while always avoiding activities that could expose the baby to impacts, falls or heat sources.

Can I breastfeed in a wrap?

Breastfeeding in a wrap is possible once you are confident using the carrier. During feeding, the baby must always be monitored and supported; afterwards, return the baby to the correct upright position with clear airways.

Can I use a wrap after a C-section?

Recovery times after a C-section vary from person to person. Listen to your body, avoid pressure on the scar area and speak with your doctor or midwife if you have pain or concerns.

Can a wrap be used during pregnancy?

A wrap can be used for some belly-supporting ties during pregnancy. If you want to continue carrying another child while pregnant, consider your own wellbeing, the child’s weight and the advice of the healthcare professional following your pregnancy.

Can a wrap hurt the wearer’s back?

A well-adjusted wrap distributes weight across several areas of the body. If pain or persistent tension occurs, check the carry, try a different adjustment and, if needed, seek help from a babywearing consultant or healthcare professional.

Can I babywear with a wrap in summer?

Yes. In summer, choose light clothing, prefer natural fibres, seek shade, avoid the hottest hours and take breaks when needed.

It is normal to feel warmth where the baby and wearer are in contact.

Can I babywear with a wrap in winter?

Yes. It is best to avoid too many layers between baby and wearer and protect both from the outside. A babywearing cover can be useful against cold, wind and light rain.

Can I cycle, ski or drive while carrying my baby in a wrap?

No. A wrap does not replace specific safety equipment and must not be used during activities with a risk of falling or impact, such as cycling, skiing or driving.

In a car, the child must always travel in an approved child restraint system suitable for their age and size.

Materials and care

What materials are BabyMonkey wraps made from?

BabyMonkey wraps are made from selected natural fibres. Depending on the model and pattern, they are available in cotton or linen and cotton blend.

How do you wash a baby wrap?

Always follow the care instructions on the product label. We recommend using a mild detergent and avoiding harsh products.

For a ring sling, protect the rings during washing to prevent them from hitting the washing machine drum.

Can the wrap go in the tumble dryer?

Always check the care label on the specific wrap. When possible, air drying is the gentlest option and helps preserve the fabric over time.

Can you iron a baby wrap?

If permitted by the care label, the wrap can be ironed at the temperature recommended for its fabric composition. Steam can help soften the fibres again after washing.

Does a woven wrap shrink when washed?

Natural-fibre fabrics can undergo normal dimensional settling during the first washes. That is why it is important to follow the care instructions and consider the product’s expected final dimensions.

Babywearing and common questions

What are the benefits of babywearing with a wrap?

Using a wrap lets you keep your baby close while having greater freedom of movement. It can be practical in everyday life, on walks and while getting around.

Does babywearing spoil a baby?

The need for contact and closeness is normal in newborns and young children. A wrap is simply one way to respond to that need while maintaining greater freedom of movement.

Can a wrap help with colic or reflux?

The upright position and close contact may feel comfortable for some babies, but a wrap is not a medical device and does not treat colic or reflux.

If symptoms are significant or persistent, or if you have concerns about your baby’s health, always consult your paediatrician.

Wrap or pushchair: which is better?

A wrap and a pushchair meet different needs and can complement each other. A wrap is especially practical on stairs, public transport, routes that are not wheel-friendly and whenever you want to keep your baby close.

Can dads, grandparents and other caregivers use the wrap too?

Yes. A wrap can be used by different people, provided each person knows how to adjust and use it correctly. With a woven wrap, the carry may need to be adapted to the wearer’s build.
